Self-Publishing for the Self

Ever want to self-publish, well, anything? It’s never been easier. Amazon KDP allows you to create a book, upload it with a book cover design (created for free in programs like Canva), and release it for sale on their platform.

And while finishing the novel may be any excuse for not self-publishing, there are a whole bunch of books you can create and publish relatively quickly. Low-content books include books where there’s not a lot of text. Examples include journals, coloring books, and business ledgers.

Because of the low barrier to entry such as start-up costs, low-content book publishing is a popular side business. Low-content publishers have flooded the markets for this kind of book. So, creating one of these books will not expedite your retirement. Making money in it, though, may not be the largest benefit of creating books for sale on Amazon.

Sure, you may be able to make a few bucks. But, the real benefit can be creating a journal or workbook that helps you out.

Perhaps you’d benefit from a journal with writing prompts about a particular subject you’d like to progress in, like botany, video games, yoga, or learning the piano. Utilizing some creativity, you can create your own journal, publish it, then use it yourself. I believe that if you find it helpful, someone else may find it beneficial too.

I use Adobe programs, typically Illustrator and InDesign, to create my books. But, even a Word document with a Canva cover is sufficient. You can publish under a pen name if you want to preserve your name for your novel debut or simply remain anonymous. There’s very little reason not to try it.

I’ve published workout trackers, and I’m currently using this approach for my own dietary needs. I’ll update the blog once the diet tracker has been published, and perhaps go into a little about the mechanics of how the process works.
